Amazon Tours...
Exploring the mighty tropical rainforest

The Amazon basin is a marvel of the world and the imagination, a place of near mythical status among travellers.

There isn't other way to feel its grandeur than taking one of the many Amazon tours in the region.

It should definitely be part of your South American vacation. The Amazon rainforest covers 2.1 million square miles or roughy two thirds of the continent.

Brazil has nearly 50% of it, Peru has 13%, and Colombia has 10% , while other countries have very small parts of the rainforest within their borders.

In total, it is shared by eight countries plus the overseas administration of French Guiana. To learn more about it, please visit Amazon rainforest map, Amazon rainforest facts and Amazon river.

A common way to experience the Amazon is at a jungle lodge. From upscale to basic, many lodges offer the chance to sleep in the forest, whether for one night or several days on a "survival tour".

Common activities include canoe trips, piranha fishing, cayman spotting, tree climbing and long hikes in the forest.

Another popular way to explore Amazonia is through riverboats, sleeping on board - from hammocks to deluxe berths - while stopping for excursions along the way. Tours usually last from five to ten days.

Best time to visit is May and June, when the water level in the Amazon River is highest and the surrounding forest is flooded - the Amazon river rises and falls by an amazing 12 to 15 meters annually - ideal time for a conoe trip through the flooded forest.

If you choose the dry season instead, you'll benefit from clear weather and the opportunity to engage in long hikes.
